Mae Mae continues her recovery

I got to visit with Miss Mae today.  She was not a happy camper.  She was sneezing blood (to be expected) and was not having any of the "warm wet rag" cleanup.  LOL

She was very fiesty, but because she was having so much bloody discharge, they wanted to keep her one more day.  I should be able to pick her up tomorrow.

We still need quite a bit in donations for her, so if you can donate for sweet little Mae, please CLICK HERE FOR PAYPAL.

Go HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE CREDIT CARD AUTHORIZATION FORM if you want to donate via credit card.  And fax it to me at 713-583-7816 - this is my personal internet fax so it comes directly to my email - no cover sheet is necessary.   Or if you want to send a check, just go to the PLEDGEFORM  and we'll count it immediately.

Baylee is progressing well

Little Baylee is progressing well after her surgery.

Even better than anticipated. She has been eating and resting comfortably in her new "house" (crate).   Though she is not very active now, as she heals this will help keep her from overdoing. She loves her little bed and can prop her chin on the edge while she catches some sleep. The exciting thing is that she now lets her foster mom know when she needs to go outside - and that is a huge improvement over her complete incontinence before the surgery.

She is out and about on the couch and bed so she can socialize. She even wagged her tail when her foster mom came home the other day. I want to thank everyone for your concern and will keep you posted of her progress.

One really cute thing - her foster "brother and sister" know she cannot get out of the crate, so they rest right up next to the crate while Baylee is sleeping.  So cute.

Funding wise, we have raised approximately $2700 for her to date.

Mae Mae's surgery is over - she's recovering

Our little Mae Mae had surgery this morning and is now recovering nicely.  Because of the severity of the surgery, she will not come home until Saturday at the earliest.

Dr. Hottinger, the GCVS surgeon who removed the plant material, infected tissue and basically cleaned out her sinus cavitiy, said that the surgery was quite challenging.  This has been a very long-standing infection and as with any abcess, had started to erode the bone surrounding the sinus cavity.  Dr. Hottinger said Mae now has basically one big hollow area where her two sinuses were before.  The bone/tissue/membrane separating the two areas is gone.

She said that during the surgery, she could actually see the large artery that carries blood to the brain pulsing in the open cavity.

Mae is resting at GCVS and could not be in better hands.

I hope this is the E N D of all of her trials and tribulations and she can soon find her forever home.  It's been a long and rough road for Mae, and I doubt we could have had a good outcome if not for the specialists at the GCVS facility.

Her surgery was called a ventral rhinotomy.

I don't have the complete tally on Mae's funds yet, but I know we are at least $1000 short.

Mae checks in for surgery

I'm putting this message out very quickly so you all will have an update, then I must get to work.  Mae checked in to Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists Surgery early this morning.  This is Lori, another of the absolutely wonderful techs that work with the surgeons.  She's taking care of Mae Mae this morning.

As soon as I hear how her surgery went, I'll publish another quick blog.

I know we got several hundred in donations last night but are still severely short.  I hope to tally this thing up sometime today, but I know we are very busy at Deogi today.

We still need a lot of help for Mae!!  Please pass this message around.  I know you, our constant, repetitive supporters are just about donation-fatigued out - what with Darden, Claude, all of Mae's prior expenses, etc.

But, we have to help Mae.

Mae needs surgery TOMORROW!!

I know this is late getting out.  Funny how life gets in the way of your plans!!  I meant to get this out over the weekend, but .....

Mae really really needs her surgery tomorrow - she is at risk of kidney damage now because of being on those antibiotics for almost three months.

The surgeon will get into her sinus cavity through the roof of her mouth - and open up the areas that have abcessed.  She will remove all of the plant material and thoroughly flush and clean those sinuses.  I hope this will finally make Mae a completely adoptable adorable little pet!!

But, we desperately need help.  We have had so very many urgent and expensive medical cases that we have tapped out all of our other sources.  Mae needs this surgery and we need your help.

Right now the total in her fund for this round of procedures is $333.  That includes $225 of the matching donations and a couple that came in before the challenge.  The total estimate for her surgery is $2300-$2500.

If you can donate for sweet little Mae, please CLICK HERE FOR PAYPAL.

I cannot tell you how much we appreciate all of your help.  You guys are what keeps me going day after day.

Thanks again

Baylee Turner surgery update - Matching Challenge update

Little Baylee's fund is right now at $2133 (YEAH!!) and there are a few checks that have gone directly to the foster mom that we now need to add up.

We think we only have $675 or so to raise, so little Baylee had her surgery!!

Ok, now for the challenge status...

For Claude, the challenge was $300 and we are at $25.  Claude is really cuter than that.  I'm not sure why he's not getting any donations.

For Miss Mae, the challenge was $300 and we are at $150.

For Little Baylee, the challenge was $300 and we are at $203.

For the general fund,  the challenge was $100 and we are at $20.

A challenge is issued for Baylee, Mae and Claude!!

WOW, all I can say is WOW.

A former LSSTLAR adopter emailed me this afternoon with a matching donation challenge to get our three sick babies the stuff they need.

She will match, dollar for dollar, all donations made for little Baylee Turner, who needs back surgery NOW, up to a total of $300.

She will match, dollar for dollar, all donations made for Mr. Claude Galvez, who just had an ear ablation at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists, up to a total of $300.

She will match, dollar for dollar, all donations made for tiny Mae Davis, who desperately needs a surgery to remove foreign material (read plant) causing a long-standing and antibiotic-resistant infection deep in her sinus cavity, up to a total of $300.

And she will match, dollar for dollar, all donations made to our LSSTLAR general vetting fund (which is used to pay the little stuff, like $700 for Murano Davis' pneumonia, $500 for Sadie McQueen's bladder stone removal, etc.), up to $100.

That is a total of $1000.  WOW, WOW, WOW.

So, please help us take advantage of this wonderful lady and very generous offer.  Please click on the links below to see their entire story.

HERE is Baylee's story.  if you can donate to little Baylee, please CLICK HERE FOR A PAYPAL DONATION

HERE IS THE STORY OF MAE DAVIS.  You might recognize her from two of the Animal Cops Houston episodes.  Now, we've already spent a lot on this dog - it took several months to figure out why she had an infection that wouldn't go away.  Thank goodness for the staff at Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists - especially Dr. Heidi Hottinger in Surgery and Dr. Chris Jones in Internal Medicine.  Without them, this little sweet abused dog would surely have died of this infection.

If you can donate for sweet little Mae, please CLICK HERE FOR PAYPAL.

Finally Claude.  HERE IS HIS STORY - left in a field to die with his two friends, he was rescued by one of the animal shelters and we just couldn't say no to this adorable boy.  He's already had his surgery - it became an emergency two weeks ago when he started to develop a second horribly large abcess.    To donate for Claude via PAYPAL GO HERE.

URGENT!! Baylee is DOWN and has been for two months!!!

Dadgum,  (ok I really want to say something stronger, but....).

Here we are with so many injured and chronically ill doggies and one we took in as "safe" now needs surgery QUICKLY.

We're in such a world of hurt.  We've already delayed Darden's FHOs and Chalupa's jaw surgery, but absolutely had to do Claude Galvez's ear ablation and really need to do Mae's surgery this week, and now this.....

You just will not believe this story.

This cute little girl, we're calling Baylee.

We received a plea in June to take this girl in.  The story goes that she had sustained a back injury in April, and the owners wanted her euthanized.  They had not been successful keeping her restrained and by May, she had become entirely paralyzed.  Their veterinary clinic did an exam in May and determined that she had some deep pain response at that time.  An employee of the clinic took her in.

This veterinary employee supposedly took her to physical therapy, accupuncture and did water therapy with her so that she was walking and "fine."  In fact, the vet wrote us a letter on July 6 that the dog was walking and "fine."  There was a comment that she might need surgery IN THE FUTURE if another injury occurred.

Well, our volunteer went to pick the dog up, she was handed Baylee wrapped in a towel.  The veterinary employee gave her a few bottles of meds and left.

When our volunteer, Pat, got home with Baylee, she discovered, to her horror, that Baylee absolutely could not walk and was incontinent!!!  Pat cried all night.  She knew that we were in a world of hurt with all of our other doggies, but how could we not help this sweet little thrown away dog??

We scheduled an emergency consult with a surgeon and what he had to say was alarming.

Evidently, Baylee had been DOWN (paralyzed) for two-three months.  She has very little deep pain response and has no idea how to make her legs work.  She does, at times, what is called "spinal walking" which means somehow she uses her back muscles to sling her legs forward, but this is NOT considered normal walking.

Had her surgery been done right after the injury, she probably would have been fine.  Now, at this late date, it is unlikely that she will regain complete function of her legs, but MIGHT be able to at least walk.  And become continent again.  Right now, she is completely incontinent.   That makes her unadoptable.

Now, I have to be honest with you, the vet said we need to do the surgery ASAP and even kept her at the clinic so that his professional people could handle her.  And, then he's only giving her a 50/50 chance at walking again.

While talking to him, I told him we were up to our necks in expensive surgery and HELLO, the economy stinks right now.  I told him we just did one expensive surgery (CLAUDE) and still needed to raise 50% of his fee AND we desperately need to do Mae's surgery before her kidneys die.  He took pity on us and said he would like to help the little girl out so would give us a 50% discount on the surgery.  I just about fell over.  Normally, these surgeries are $6000 or even more.  He will do it for $2800 plus the initial exam and x-rays, which were $380.

But, he wants to do the surgery asap, now, immediately, as in TOMORROW!!

Do we want to help this baby?  He can schedule the surgery for tomorrow afternoon.

And now Mae needs surgery quickly

Based on the recent urinalysis on Mae, I really wanted to get Mae's surgery done this week.  The antibiotics that are holding her infection at bay are now affecting her kidneys.  We need the surgery to go into her sinus cavity and remove all of the plant material and infected tissue asap.

I know, I know we're always asking for help with these little guys.  Right now the economy is impacting us so badly that we are not even able to cover our normal vetting bills with the typical monthly donations.  So we really have to do this fundraisig for Miss Mae and we just cannot give up on her!!

We're still not whole for Claude's surgery, so we absolutely cannot schedule Mae's yet.  But, I don't want this adorable, sweet little girl to suffer and I sure don't want her kidneys to deteriorate.  We desperately need $2800 in her fund by THURSDAY, July 23.  I don't think it's safe to delay her surgery any longer.

Please help us help this sweetie!!  She has been through SOOOOOO much since she was rescued from a horrible breeding situation.  If anyone deserves to be pain free, it's Mae.

She's been on antibiotics for about a YEAR, she's had two CT Scans, an Endoscope, an eye enucleation, heartworm treatment....you get my drift, don't you.

If you can donate, please CLICK HERE FOR PAYPAL, or GO HERE TO PLEDGE TO SEND A CHECK or HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE CREDIT CARD AUTHORIZATION FORM.

Claude Recovering Nicely - THANKS TO YOU

Hello everyone.  Our adorable Mr Cloud (AKA Claude Galvez) is recovering nicely from his ear ablation surgery!!  He is now allowed out of the crate if he is relatively quiet.  Isn't he a doll?

Claude is about 12 years old but very hardy.  His ear has been his only real health problem since we got him.  I'd love for him to find a forever home now.  So if anyone's interested, please email me at teresa@shihtzu-rescue.com.

But, unfortunatly, because of all of the severe problems my own Ginger was having - last time I posted, she was having a stomach upset - well, that landed her back in ICU for several days this week - I just haven't had time to get back to writing you about the status of his surgery fund.

As of right now, we have raised $900 toward his vet bill.  The total came out just under $2400 instead of $2600, but we are a tad behind.  Please pass this message around to all lhasa lovers you know.  I know the economy is horrible right now, believe me, we're feeling it at Deogi, but I still can't give up on these puppers!!

Claude's Story

Since we're focused so heavily on Claude Galvez right now, I wanted to repost his story starting from the beginning two years ago.  Here goes.

URGENTLY NEEDING FOUR SPECIAL FOSTER HOMES FOR FOUR SPECIAL SENIOR LHASAS!

Posted in Galveston Lhasa Trio at 8:59 am by Lone Star Shih Tzu and Lhasa Apso Rescue

We’ve committed to taking in the three senior throw-away lhasas in the Galveston shelter but desperately need a forever foster home or three for them!!!   They do not deserve to remain in the shelter NOR in boarding any longer.  PLEASE help!

If you have adopted from us and have a nurturing nature, please sign up for these puppers NOW.  I really want to go get them before the weekend and let them know the love of a real home.  If you’ve forgotten the story, here it is….

Please allow me to relate a sad story.  Yesterday animal control picked up two horribly matted and filthy Lhasas on a remote road where they had obviously been dumped.  Upon arrival at the shelter the terrified dogs cowered in the corner of the kennel.  It was hard to tell what they were and the smell from their wet filthy bodies was gagging.  I came to work this morning and decided my first task would be to shave down the two dogs so they could be assessed.   To my horror, the underside of the matted fur was crawling with hundreds of maggots.  The fur over the rear of the dogs was so hard that neither dog could defecate. As I released the mats, they began to pass huge amounts of feces, also laden with maggots.  I almost decided at that point to just put these poor creatures out of the misery they were enduring, but did not want them to die in that condition, so I continued.  In addition to the maggots, thousands of fleas covered their poor bodies.  After they were shaved and bathed I found two older, neutered males who were as sweet as can be.  One is blind, or nearly so, and the other has severely inflamed skin and lesions from the mats/maggots.  They both have infected ears and are going to need major care.  We have a local vet who has generously donated services to our shelter and I am going to call him tomorrow and have them evaluated.  These dogs are well fed and someone loved them at some time in their life.  I am now determined that unless the vet says there is no hope, they will not be euthanized.  I know it is very hard to place older dogs, but if your rescue has any fosters who can help these boys recover, I think they would be adoptable.

Then a few days later….

I have an update, the day after the two males came in, a female was found dumped in the same area, in the same condition.  She also had twine wrapped tightly around a leg and has an infected paw.  All three went to the vet and are on antibiotics, as well as medication for the eyes and ears.  The female and one male have ulcers on their corneas, but the other male’s eyes are OK.  All three are sweet dogs and obviously came from the same owner.  The female was thrilled to see (or smell) the other two.  They are safe in my office waiting for an “angel.”

Here are the pictures sent to us by the shelter…

Claude Galvez COMES HOME

Many of you know how I've been struggling with my own little Ginger's life for the past three months.  For those of you that don't, Ginger has been battling lymphoma, which is cancer of the lymphatic system, since October 2006.  In April, she came out of remission and we've been struggling to get her back to a good place.  She had a bad, albeit fairly common, reaction to one of the drugs in May and was in ICU for five days.  AFter trying practically every chemo on the market, we finally realized she had become resistant and chemo was no longer an option for her.

Last week, we tried a new, non-standard, approach which was to use radiation.  Ginger's lymphoma is, thankfully, not in her internal organs as of yet, so she was a candidate for nodal radiation.  In this protocol, each external node is hit with radiation three times in the span of a week.  Thankfully, all of her nodes practically disappeared.

But, late last night, she became very, very ill - bad gastric upset - so this morning we spent the morning at the vet for fluids, tests and many drugs.  As of right now, 2:30 pm, she seems to have stablized and is snoozing comfortably.

So, now on to the update on Claude....some of this has already been posted on our facebook page, www.facebook.com/lsstlar, but here goes....

GCVS called early Friday morning to tell me I could come get Claude.  This was MUCH MUCH earlier than I expected.  I picked him up late yesterday afternoon.  Here he is with Ms. Paula, his new best friend  She had to explain all of the after care for him and she also told me how lucky it was that we accelerated his surgery - the infection was spreading quickly inside of the closed-up wound.

You can see how swollen his right ear is - poor boy.

Dr. Hottinger closed up the open, gaping wound and inserted a drain tube which will come out on Monday.

URGENT: Claude and now MAE - Help please!

Claude is recovering from his surgery and they want me to pick him up this afternoon.  EEK!  This is way sooner than I expected.  We have raised over $500 for him, but we still need $2100 in his fund asap.

On top of that, Mae had some labs done yesterday and now her surgery is close to urgent.  The amikacin she is getting daily is on the verge of harming her kidneys.  We need to STOP this antibiotic and surgerically remove the plant matter from her deteriorating sinus cavity.  This surgery is also around $2600.

I don't know what to do right now.  With the economy as it is, we are having trouble handling the normal vetting costs much less these extraordinary things!

Claude checks in at Gulf Coast!!

Our adorable little Claude Galvez checked in this morning for his ear ablation, and none too soon.  I can tell the ear is getting infected again so this is very timely.

Dr. Hottinger will be doing the surgery today!  Yay for Claude.

Here is what will be done, thanks Barbara G for suggesting these graphics.

This is what the ear canal looks like in a dog.  The problem with Claude is that he had chronic ear infections way before we got him and the part marked "canal" was basically closed up because of scar tissue.  In fact, his ear flap is shorter than the other and thicker suggesting that he had several hematomas too.

You can see how a horrible abcess can develop if the canal, through which "stuff" drains, is clogged up.

This shows how the surgery is done.  Basically the part labeled "canal" or shaded with cross hatches on the above graphic, is completely removed and the opening to the ear canal in the ear flap is sutured shut - no more infection, EVER.

He deserves to live the rest of his life pain free.  Please help us let him do that!!

Thanks to Marty Howard, Barbara Grabell, Christine Apple, Dana Del Bianco,Dale Stone, Peter Ymson and Lorna Van De Wiele, Susan Lewis, Josh Rosenbaum, Anne Laquidara, Tricia Havis, Christine Hutchison, his fund is at $340 right now.  Still a way to go!!

Sweet Claude Galvez - Fundraising Status

Sometimes I just can't believe you all.  We already have $245 toward Claude's $2600 surgery.  And I'm positive he can have it because I know how much you all love these dogs.

Claude is a wonderful little old man  Asks for nothing except a nice place to sleep and loves his food.  He sometimes, when he feels good, will go play with some of the other dogs.  Lately, with all of the infection, he hasn't done much playing.

He deserves to live the rest of his life pain free.  Please help us let him do that!!

URGENT: Claude Galvez needs an ear ablation!

Poor little Claude Galvez;  he is one of our adorable forever fosters.  He has always struggled with one bad ear - constantly infected, even when cleaned every day.  I wanted to get his ear ablated many months ago, but with all of the other URGENT situations and the economy, I held off.  Bad mistake.

Several weeks ago, Claude developed a massive abcess underneath his ear - I mean it was horrendous - like the size of a grapefruit.  That's huge hanging off the ear of a 20 pound lhasa boy.  I rushed him to Stafford Oaks and Dr. Brady, one of the wonderful vets, immediately opened it up and flushed out the massive infection.

This is what it looked like after it was treated.  Yes, that red stuff is an open wound!!!

Claude then stayed in the hospital for about a week.

Since then, we've been working on getting that huge wound closed up, but now that the hole is almost closed and his ear is still draining we MUST get that ear out.

I spoke with Dr. Heidi Hottinger, of Gulf Coast Veterinary Specialists and she will do it

ASAP - as in TOMORROW, THURSDAY.  The cost is $2600.

Please, please help us help little adorable Claude.
